Anesthesia knowledge without limits – Tanzania

Dinsdag 10 februari 2026

This project is developing a free and mobile-accessible online learning platform: de Basics of Anesthesia Website. The platform brings together essential anesthesia knowledge for healthcare providers in low-resource hospitals in Tanzania and other African contexts. The website contains practical information and case studies that are relevant to local contexts available medication, equipment,

and work processes. In addition, research is being conducted into how the existing Basics of Anesthesia Course can be scaled up to new locations.

This will give anesthesia care providers continuous access to reliable knowledge, leading to safer care and better patient outcomes.

Project

In many hospitals in Tanzania, providing safe anesthesia care is difficult due to limited resources and a lack of continuing education. This project is developing a free, low-bandwidth website with practical anesthesia knowledge and case studies tailored to local conditions. In addition, research is being conducted into how the existing Basics of Anesthesia course can be expanded to new locations.

Goal

A functioning Basics of Anesthesia website with reliable, context-specific content (wiki and practical cases), developed with local partners and experts.

In addition, a plan will be drawn up for scaling up the Basics of Anesthesia Course via a train-the-trainer approach, including an inventory visit and a pilot course at a new location.

Results

  • An accessible anesthesia website that is free and mobile-friendly
  • Practical wiki content and case studies, reviewed by experts
  • An international content team of junior educators, doctors, and specialists
  • A detailed plan for scaling up the course to new hospitals
  • 20 additional anesthesia care providers trained during a pilot course

Health pioneer Anne Bloemendaal

Anne Bloemendaal is a health pioneer and active member of Global Surgery Amsterdam. Drawing on her medical background and years of involvement in anesthesia training in Tanzania, she is committed to safer surgical care. Together with Tanzanian partners, she is developing the Basics of Anesthesia Website: a practical, free knowledge platform for anesthesia care providers. She is also working on scaling up the course so that local teams can become increasingly independent.
